The old offices of Ametek/U.S. Gauge on Clymer Avenue in Sellersville were demolished this past week.
U.S. Gauge was once the largest employer in Sellersville. The main building a few blocks away still has a few dozen employees but no where near the number of people it had a few decades ago.
In recent years the building has been abandoned and home to the occasional vagrant.
Last weekend was Lansdale Bike Night. A short drive down route 309 from Bucks County in the borough of Lansdale. The main street is closed off and thousands of motorcycles converge on the town. They call it "The Sturgis of the East". Lots of Harleys and a couple of old Triumphs. This one caught my eye...the chrome looked like it was triple plated! The rear of the adjacent Harley is reflected in the chrome.
I was walking along Chapman Road at the northern end of Lake Galena and saw some thistles. Upon closer inspection, this buterfly started darting around so I thought I'd play around with macro. I should have used a tripod since it's a bit fuzzy. I don't think I noticed the bee when I took the picture. It was only later when I was looking at it that I thought of Ali....."float like a butterfly, sting like a bee".
I started out on burgundyBut soon hit the harder stuffEverybody said they'd stand behind meWhen the game got roughBut the joke was on meThere was nobody even there to bluffI'm going back to New York CityI do believe I've had enough.----Bob Dylan---- This picture reminds me of that song.
Sellersville and Perkasie are two neighboring towns in western Bucks County,PA. Back in the day(mid 1800's to early 1900's) , the towns were big cigar manufacturing areas. The tobacco was shipped in by wagon from farmers in Lancaster County. After a while, the business became so big it led to the railroads building lines to these areas to handle all the volume of tobacco being used. Many of the old cigar rolling factories still remain; this one in Perkasie is now an office building and home to Morgan Bockius studios. I thought the 5 cent cigar sign was a nice nod to the past....
I was watching a couple of movies recently; "Yonkers Joe" & "Righteous Kill" and I realized I haven't been in Manhattan for a while. I need to make a trip! Above is a cell-phone pic from last July going through The Holland Tunnel,,, I always feel at home in NY.
Lake Galena in Peace Valley Park near Doylestown, PA has some little docks which are more like little places where you can stop and sit and watch the day and boats and people go by.....
A new business opened in downtown Sellersville two days ago! They have all kinds of camping, hiking, fishing, and biking items. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in town, I wish them well! If you're a fisherman you should stop in and try some of the custom made jelly worms impregnated with hormones!
It kind of worries me when I see a picture of FDR during these economic times...this is advertising lunch outside The Washington House in downtown Sellersville.
